History
Alexander City was incorporated in 1874 and named in honor of Edward Porter Alexander, a Confederate general and railroad engineer who played a key role in bringing rail service to the region. The construction of Martin Dam by Alabama Power in 1926 created Lake Martin, transforming the region and eventually making Alexander City a destination for lakeside tourism and recreation.
