About Alexander City, AL

Alexander City is a vibrant small city located in Tallapoosa County in the east-central region of Alabama. Sitting along the shores of Lake Martin, one of Alabama's most beloved recreational lakes, the city blends natural beauty with a rich industrial and cultural heritage. Location & geography

Alexander City is situated in east-central Alabama, roughly 60 miles northeast of Montgomery and about 55 miles southeast of Tuscaloosa. The city covers a total land area of 222.71 square miles and a water area of 28.76 square miles, with much of that water area attributable to the expansive Lake Martin reservoir that borders and partly surrounds the city. The terrain features gently rolling hills typical of the Piedmont region of Alabama, with dense woodlands, creek tributaries, and the Tallapoosa River corridor shaping the landscape.

Community & economy

Alexander City has a close-knit community character, with residents proud of their city's blend of outdoor recreation and local industry. The economy has historically been anchored by textile manufacturing, most notably through Russell Corporation, which was headquartered here and became one of the largest athletic apparel manufacturers in the country. Day-to-day life in Alexander City revolves around local schools, Lake Martin waterfront activities, shopping along US Highway 280, and a growing selection of locally owned restaurants and small businesses.

Transportation

Alexander City is served primarily by US Highway 280, a major commercial corridor that connects the city to Auburn and Opelika to the east and Birmingham to the northwest. Alabama State Route 22 and State Route 63 also pass through the area, providing access to surrounding Tallapoosa County communities. The nearest commercial airport with scheduled service is Auburn University Regional Airport, approximately 45 miles to the east, while Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport offers a broader range of flights about 75 miles to the northwest.

History

Alexander City was incorporated in 1874 and named in honor of Edward Porter Alexander, a Confederate general and railroad engineer who played a key role in bringing rail service to the region. The arrival of the railroad spurred growth in the local textile industry, which would define the city's economy for much of the 20th century. The construction of Martin Dam by Alabama Power in 1926 created Lake Martin, transforming the region and eventually making Alexander City a destination for lakeside tourism and recreation.

Alexander City is home to Lake Martin, a 40,000-acre reservoir with over 700 miles of shoreline, making it one of the largest man-made lakes in the southeastern United States and a major draw for boaters, anglers, and vacationers from across the region. The city is also recognized as the birthplace of Russell Athletic, a brand whose sportswear products became standard issue for college and professional athletic teams across the country for decades.
